Q&A with CloudPOST’s Contributing Editor, Kathy Xu
Neill Feather, President of SiteLock, leads the company in the development of its unique approach to 360-degree domain security, which involves providing industry analysis and utilizing rapidly evolving data sets related to security and hacking trends. Mr. Feather recently spoke with CloudPOST about his participation at HostingCon Global 2017, which takes place April 3-6 in Los Angeles. Mr. Feather will be speaking on a panel titled Trends in Ecommerce 2017: Delivering Functionality and Success. We also discussed what differentiates SiteLock from other security companies, the evolving cloud industry and its challenges.
CloudPOST, Kathy Xu (CP-KX) Question: Tell our readers about your company: What do you do and what problems are you attempting to solve?
SiteLock, Neill Feather (SiteLock-NF) Answer: As a global leader in website security, SiteLock has a mission to protect every website on the internet. Founded in 2008, SiteLock secures more than 6 million websites worldwide. According to recent SiteLock data, websites experience 22 attacks per day, adding up to 8,000 attacks per year, per website. As cybercrime continues to rise, today’s businesses must realize that these ever-evolving threats don’t discriminate. It’s no longer a matter of if, but when, a security breach will strike. It’s more important than ever to ensure effective security measures are in place.
The SiteLock portfolio of comprehensive cloud-based solutions delivers the technology to find vulnerabilities, automatically remove known malware, defend against DDoS attacks, meet PCI compliance standards, and accelerate website performance. Backed by a dedicated team of full-time security researchers and engineers, SiteLock is continuously helping customers defend against new cyberthreats.
CP-KX Q: What has your company achieved that makes it unique in the industry?
SiteLock-NF A: In 2016, SiteLock was named Arizona’s fastest-growing software company by Deloitte in its annual Fast 500 for the second year in a row. In 2016 and 2017, SiteLock was included in the prestigious Gartner Magic Quadrant for Application Security Testing. Our notable growth and industry recognition can be attributed to our comprehensive suite of security offerings, market presence, ongoing product innovation, and exceptional customer service.
Some of the most notable website security solutions offered in the SiteLock cloud-based portfolio include our automatic malware detection and removal services. These unique tools are designed to provide comprehensive, continuous scanning to ensure maximum protection against vulnerabilities, malicious links, backdoor files and other security threats. SiteLock is the only website security provider to offer this level of scanning protection, which further distinguishes us within a highly competitive market.
In addition, SiteLock developed the SiteLock Risk Assessment, a predictive model used to determine a website’s likelihood of attack. During the assessment, we leverage our massive data set of over 6 million websites and more than 500 variables, to complete a high-level security analysis of our customers’ websites and calculate their risk score and likelihood of compromise.
CP-KX Q: How do you see the cloud industry evolving? What do you think is the greatest challenge in the cloud industry?
SiteLock – NF A: Cloud-based security solutions are a highly effective and affordable way to protect against today’s ever-evolving cyberthreats given their flexibility and scalability. As cloud-based security solutions become more prevalent, we predict more and more small and mid-size businesses will leverage them as a part of a proactive measure to ensure the security of their websites.
One key challenge the cloud industry faces is bringing awareness to the fact that all website owners are at risk of cybercrime — regardless of industry, company size, or amount of website traffic. We find that many website owners, typically smaller businesses who don’t sell anything online, often assume they are not at risk of a cyberattack. However, cybercriminals are actively stealing website resources from any business for financial gain, including bandwidth, traffic, and customer data.
CP-KX Q: Where are you looking to strategically move your business within the next few years?
SiteLock-NF A: One of SiteLock’s greatest initiatives is its involvement in the open-source platform community. To support this initiative, we’ve developed unique products and plugins tailored to fit the needs of content management system users. SiteLock also actively attends and sponsors open-source software tradeshows and events around the world.
CP-KX Q: What would you like to accomplish at HostingCon?
SiteLock-NF A: This is the ninth year SiteLock will be attending HostingCon. Each year we look forward to HostingCon as an opportunity to strengthen and develop new hosting relationships.
This year I am looking forward to participating in an eCommerce panel, Trends in Ecommerce 2017: Delivering Functionality and Success. Through our attendance and the panel discussion we hope to leave attendees with a more focused stance on cybersecurity, as well as an understanding of how to address customer concerns by taking proactive security measures to stay ahead of trends and risks.
CP-KX: Thank you for your time and best of luck at HostingCon.
