Stephanie Weagle, Vice President of Corero Shares Insights into Company Success, DDoS Mitigation Market and Participation in HostingCon

Q&A with CloudPOST’s Contributing Editor, Kathy Xu

Corero Vice President Stephanie Weagle CloudPOST recently spoke with Corero Vice President Stephanie Weagle about Corero’s participation in HostingCon April 3-6 in Los Angeles. Corero CEO Ashley Stephenson will present a HostingCon educational session on Wednesday, April 5 at 2:15 p.m., and the company will exhibit its DDoS solutions for service providers, hosting providers, and online enterprises. In this Q&A, we discuss Corero’s unique offerings, company goals and changes in cloud security.

CloudPOST, Kathy Xu (CP-KX) Question: Tell our readers about your company. What do you do and what problems are you attempting to solve?

Corero, Stephanie Weagle (Corero-SW) Answer: Disruptions to internet-facing services due to DDoS attacks can cripple operations, impact customers and result in major economic losses. Service providers, hosting providers and the online enterprise are all impacted by DDoS attacks, which have continued to grow in size, frequency and sophistication in recent years. Not surprisingly, customer expectations for advanced security have also grown. Enterprises are increasingly calling on their service providers to assist them in detecting, analyzing and protecting against DDoS attacks before the attacks impact their business.

Corero Network Security is the leader in high-performance DDoS defense solutions. Internet businesses increasingly rely on Corero’s award winning technology, the SmartWall Threat Defense System (TDS) for automatic DDoS detection and mitigation of attacks in seconds, versus minutes or tens of minutes it can take with traditional mitigation techniques. With varied deployment topologies, the SmartWall family of solutions utilizes modern DDoS mitigation architecture to automatically and surgically, remove DDoS attack traffic. The SmartWall TDS powers a rich set of DDoS analytics for granular network visibility, alerting and reporting.

CP-KX Q: What has your company achieved that makes it unique in the industry?

Corero-SW A: The SmartWall TDS solution can be delivered as either physical security appliances or in a virtual form-factor. Corero’s purpose-built DDoS defense architecture delivers surgical DDoS mitigation, at line-rate, without impacting good user traffic.

SmartWall TDS allows service providers, hosting providers and online enterprises to deploy the solution as it best suits their environment, with centralized or distributed DDoS attack protection, either in-line, or in a scrubbing operation. Corero’s solutions are the highest-performing solutions in the industry, while providing the most robust security coverage, at unprecedented scale, with the lowest total cost of ownership to the customer. These solutions are designed to provide real-time attack mitigation with continuous threat visibility, which allows our customers to also monetize DDoS-Protection-as-a-Service (DDPaaS) offerings.

CP-KX Q: How do you see the cloud industry evolving? What do you think is the greatest challenge in the cloud industry?

Corero-SW A: More and more online enterprises are looking to their cloud providers to deliver more robust protection against the evolving threat landscape — specifically, DDoS. This elevation of risk comes at a time when DDoS attacks continue to increase in frequency, scale and sophistication. A recent Corero study indicates that 31 percent of IT security professional and network operators experienced more DDoS attacks than usual in recent months, with 40 percent now experiencing attacks on a monthly, weekly or even daily basis. To alleviate this problem, 85 percent are now demanding additional help from their ISPs to block DDoS traffic before it reaches them.

Organizations that once had DDoS protection projects on the back burner are now re-prioritizing their security strategies to place DDoS mitigation at the forefront in 2017, and cloud providers must evolve to meet this demand.

CP-KX Q: How are you looking to strategically guide your business within the next few years?

Corero-SW A: Corero will continue to disrupt the DDoS mitigation industry with the SmartWall TDS, delivering scalable protection against DDoS attacks, in the most complex environments, while enabling a more cost-effective economic model than previously available. This technology is helping providers turn the DDoS threat into an opportunity for premium revenue generating services, in turn safeguarding customer retention and providing a competitive differentiator for providers in the face of DDoS attacks.

CP-KX Q: What would you like to accomplish at HostingCon?

Corero-SW A: Corero is looking forward to HostingCon as an opportunity to meet with customers, partners and leading-edge providers, and to change the way they view the DDoS threat to their business. We are also pleased to be presenting a session at HostingCon 2017, “Responding to the Modern Day DDoS Attack.” The session aims to discuss the rise in IoT botnet activity, specifically the Mirai botnet, as well as the evolution of DDoS mitigation techniques, and best practices for modern day mitigation.

CP-KX: Thank you for your time and best of luck at HostingCon.
