Robert Jacobi, Open Source Matters, President

CloudPOST recently spoke with Robert Jacobi, President of Open Source Matters, about what the company would like to accomplish at HostingCon Global 2017, which takes place April 3-6 in Los Angeles. In this Q&A, we discuss Open Source Matters’ achievements, the cloud industry and its greatest challenge and goal for the future.

CloudPOST, Kathy Xu (CP-KX) Question: Tell our readers about your company. What do you do and what problems are you attempting to solve?

Robert Jacobi (OPEN SOURCE MATTERS-RJ) A: Open Source Matters (OSM) is a not-for-profit organization, incorporated in the United States, created to serve the financial and legal interests of the Joomla! project. Our organization is accountable to Joomla, acting in Joomla’s interest and ensuring that it is the right shape and size to support Joomla.

CP-KX Q: What has your company achieved that makes it unique in the industry?

OSM-RJ A: We are responsible for managing one the largest open source projects on the internet. Joomla runs over 3% of the web, has over 70 million downloads, and hundreds of thousands of community volunteers. Joomla has been at the forefront of open source content management systems for over ten years.

CP-KX Q: How do you see the cloud industry evolving? What do you think is the greatest challenge in the cloud industry?

OSM-RJ A: The cloud industry will soon be synonymous with the internet. Hosted applications and services are more convenient, secure and sustainable in the long run. The greatest challenge is developing and maintaining the infrastructure required for 100% access, encryption, security and scalability.

CP-KX Q: Where are you looking to strategically move your business within the next few years?

OSM-RJ A: Joomla is already available on a number of cloud service providers. Our goal is to foster additional adoption and a services market for cloud providers as part of the Joomla ecosystem.

CP-KX Q: What would you like to accomplish at HostingCon?

OSM-RJ A: OSM and the Joomla project are looking to have greater representation with hosting providers and educate hosting providers about the benefits of providing services that can grow the bottom line by partnering with OSM and integrating Joomla.

CP-KX: Thank you for your time and best of luck at HostingCon.
